- There are quite a few cons to owning a cat, but from my experience there are very easy solutions for each of them. I have two cats, both of which I have had all my life, and they are great pets. They had to be kept apart for quite a few years, but now they get along perfectly fine. Scratching - Many cats need to keep their claws sharp, and because it is a natural instinct, it is not very preventable. Declawing is always an option, but one that I would not recommend. You are lucky, because there are many scratching posts and toys out there these days, and most of the time all you need is a square foot of carpet attached to the wall. Droppings - These days, it is very easy to potty train a cat, especially a kitten. Cats are naturally neat, so if you supply them with a litterbox all it takes is a little training and you don't have to worry about it anymore. Of course, sometimes a cat will have an accident, but that occurrence is a very rare one if the cat is well trained. In fact, one of my cats cannot control her bladder but most of the time she manages to make it to the litterbox. However, make sure they're placed all over the house, especially if your cat likes to roam. Also make sure not to leave any boxes or piles of soft things out where your cat can get to them. From experience I can tell you it is very disgusting and smelly when you come across the thing the next time. Smell - Cats are rarely ever smelly, but their droppings are. To prevent this you can get a specially-made litter that reduces smell or just clean out the litter regularly. Shedding - This is the WORST. NEVER where black pants when your cat is shedding, even if its a black cat. For some reason, cats LOVE black bottoms and it seems to attract them like moths to a light. Thankfully there are lots of relatively cheep products out there that allow you to clean off fur quite easily indeed. Grooming - You only need to worry about this if the cat you get is a long-hair. I have a medium-hair, and he never needs grooming. However, if you get a Persian or another long-haired cat, either brush regularly or be prepared for a very ugly cat with matted fur. Hope this helps!
- One con, scratching furniture. My solution, buy a scratching post or get them De-clawed. It should give the cat something better to tear up and give it the basic idea of what not to scratch :) Second con, Unwanted kittens. If its a female make sure to get it spayed, especially if its going to be an outdoors cat, Males, Just get them neutered unless you want your furniture and walls sprayed with kitty pee.
- Some cats catch fleas easily, but this can be easily prevented by not letting your cat outside or putting a flea collar on it when it does. Cats tend to wreck furniture, but if you train it to use a scratching post it won't do that.
- living things need to go to the bathroom...cats go in a litter box and unfortunately that smells horrible! but there is a solution to everything...move the litter box into a room that youdon'tt use a lot or in the laundry room..you cant possibly be in there for long periods of time. then of course theres the odor block litter..it might cost a little more but it gives your nose a break...and it does work! other than te litter box catsdon'tt have many cons..yes they do sheed but if your brush it daily you will enjoy your cat and so will your mom!!
- Definitely scratching furniture but that can be solved w/ most cats easily if you put in effort. There are sticky pads you can put so they learn its unpleasant, there are also plastic nail caps and also spraying them with water when they do something bad. Shedding and cleaning up the litter box. Those are really the most common and its less responsibility than a dog thats one of the reasons I chose to get a cat instead of another dog, dogs take up much more time! Most cats are pretty cool, especially the social ones and little maintenance required.
