Cat Information

What is the best cat litter to get? I've tried a few and it always comes out of the box with my cat?

The cat litter goes everywhere. Looking for one that clumps, keeps the oder down, and doesn't make a mess outside the box. What do you recommend and why?

  1. It's not always the litter's fault: You may need a box with slightly higher sides, or that is enclosed. That's the only way I've found to keep litter from flying every which-where.
  2. I have tried so many cat litters - the one I'm sticking with is Tidy Cats Scoop - Multiple Cats (in the green top). I live in an appartment, and can't deal with any smell whatsoever. It clumps well, and is fine-grained, so my cats like it too. What I would recommend, is trying a covered litter box. It helps keep the smell and the litter in. Plus, my cats love it... it gives them their privacy.
  3. I use Premium Choice in the blue bag. It clumps, controls odor, and doesn't track as bad as some. They make a mat for cats to step on when they leave the box. It removes most of the litter stuck to his feet. You can find them at any pet store.
  4. I have a big hooded litter box with a cat flap door and still unbelievable amounts of cat litter are tossed out every day. I believe it's really just down to the cat and it doesn't seem quite a 'trainable' issue. I'm in the UK and I think Catsan (the hygiene blue bag one) is the best overall for odour. lasting etc. But I can't keep it in the litter box! Catsan Wood (green bag) is better for keeping it in and lasts forever. Little wood-like pellets gradually dissolve into sand which means no little stones tossed out of the box. But of course there is a downside - sandy footprints everywhere.... I have now resigned myself to using the best odour control litter and have bought a hand held hoover which picks up the bits outside the box in seconds. Let me know if you ever find a better solution!
  5. I use Petsmart's Exquisicat extra strength scoop. It is great at controlling ordor, inexpensive and smells good. I place an old bath room rug underneath the cat box so that when my cat comes of his box the litter goes on the rug instead of the floor.
  6. I use Tidy Cat for Multiple cats, but I've found tracking to be a problem with all kinds of litter. The best solution I've found is to simply put a few cheap throw rugs around the litter boxes so there's at least a foot extending around the box on all sides. I just pick the rugs up a few times a week and shake the loose litter back into the box.
  7. Yeah, even the best clumping litter will fly when kitty scratches around in there. We had the same problem, and went to a covered box to help solve it.
  8. Hi Glass House! Any question about litter and litter boxes is one that cat people can answer and discuss for hours on end. I sure can ID with your problem. I used to have tons of litter outside my boxes until I found the best litter boxes that I have ever used. I am not a spokesperson for either the litter or the type of box that I switched to years ago, so this is not an "infokittymercial". Many cats like to dig to "the bottom of the planet" in their boxes, and kick out a lot of litter from the box to begin with. As they jump out of the box, litter sticks to their paws. We found that the Clevercat box, ( which you can get for a very reasonable cost at Amazon.com) works great. The box is very high sided, and has a cover which is specially textured to catch a lot of that litter. There is no way they can kick litter outside this box, trust me. It also is great for neutered males who like to stand up to "pee", as no urine can get over the top of the box. They are easy to clean as well. http://www.amazon.com/Clevercat-Top-Entry-Litter-Box/dp/B0009YSAZO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1208878296&sr=8-1 I do not recommend plastic liners in any boxes because kitties just put holes in them with their claws, making a further mess. We use World's Best Litter. It is made of corn. It is clumpable, flushable and septic safe. You can find dealers if you go to their website: http://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/Products/WBCL/default.aspx It is extremely dust free and lasts a long time, and prevents odors from accumulating, if you scoop regularly, just needing to add fresh litter to keep the box pristine. In fact there is no scent of kitty box in our home. We have three boxes for two kitties and everyone is very happy. Hope this helps. I know you are going to get tons of opinions. After much experimentation, we have solved our litter box problems totally. Troublesniffer Owned by cats for over 40 years http://frequentlyfeline.blogspot.com/
