How do I get rid of my cat litter box smell?

I love cats but have always hated one thing about them, the litter box. I looked for options for years. I saw a vented litter box on ebay. These things pull the cat litter box smells outside through a vent. They do require that a vent pipe to be installed through the outside wall . They seem like the answer. Anyone familiar with these?

  1. I dont think there is a way besides putting baking powder in it. Sorry I couldnt say anything else! :{
  2. I've never heard of those vented litter boxes before. One thing that I found really helps is Arm&Hammer MultiCat litter. It's by far the best cat litter I've ever used. That paired with scooping once a day (you can even leave it a bit longer if you have multiple litter boxes) works like a charm. I can't even smell it when I'm scooping it!
  3. No, sorry I haven't tried the vent thing. But I''m answering because after recently switching to Cat Attract litter I am really amazed by how well it seems to control the odour. It is made by "Dr. Elsey's". Also of course the litter box should be cleaned at least once a day. and if an old box may need to be replaced as the odour can get into scratches in the plastic. (Sorry if those were like totally obvious.) EDIT: I liked the Arm & Hammer litter too, but I gotta say the Cat Attract beats it paws down.
  4. clean it I'll add on that after thinking about. Generaly cat do not like the scented kitty litter. But there are some on the market that will help with smell some of the crystal kitty litters have scent removers. if you keep it in a well ventalated area ie open window. You shouldn't have to much of a problem if you keep it clean.
  5. Try one of those litter boxes with the lid, where they go in and out themselves through a doggy door type thing. ALso, use Fresh Step cat litter. It doenst have a littery smell and it really controls odor from the pee and poop. My cats litter box is in the living room behind the couch and no one ever smells it.
  6. Vented litter boxes are nice, but they are alot of work. As far as i've seen, a "Doggie door" Litter box, some baking soda, and a daily cleaning should do the trick. And just try to keep it in a nonchalant place in the house. Have a laundry room? Put it there! Cat allowed in the basement? There you go!
  7. i have 2 cats that use the same box and have NO smell except for when theres poo in it at which time it's time to scoop it out. FIRST - get a brand new box. once one smells, you cant get it clean so chuck out your old one. NEXT, ALWAYS use cat litter box LINERS - its like a white trash bag that fits inside of the box. they will keep the plastic box from absorbing the smell of the urine and poopie. ALWAYS use enought scoopable scented cat litter - about 1/2 a big box. Scoop every single day. Change your litter entirely every week-10 days and always use a fresh litter box liner bag. You will NEVER have a problem again. Also, the box I use has a clip on vented lid on top. It came with a little clear plastic swinging door for the cats to get in but they didnt like it so I took it off. the nice thing about these boxes is that they also clip over the top edge of the little box liner bags to help hold them in place. these bags are essential! They are near the cat litter - all grocery stores have them. Again, make sure you use a lot of litter. if you're being too skimpy with it, there's probably not enought excess litter surrounding the cats "mess" to cover it and control the smell until you scoop it. literally pour in 1/2 a box and each time you scoop at a sprinkling over the top of the litter box of fresh new litter - just a little
  8. clean it out,change the litter.......why don't you just get a new litter box...
  9. To take another approach, consider changing your cat's diet. Cats who eat raw meat have the least offensive smelling stool. And for urine odors, it doesn't smell nearly as bad when a cat is eating a diet of canned food (or raw meat). The urine is diluted by the wet food and so doesn't smell as bad. The stool odor is minimized because the cat is eating species appropriate food and its digestive system doesn't have to fight all the carbs present in most dry foods and the inferior brands of canned food.
  10. Same thing, it smelled so bad we put the litter box upstairs. But now it smells worse! So heres what we did: We got that quick scooper thing.. (The commercial with the lady and man fighting over who cleans the litterbox) and it works. No scooping, and no smells (Just a little bit, we fixed it with New litter (forgot the name..) that has the baking powder in it. It works fine. The cats love it. And they don't sleep in it anymore :-)
  11. I change the litter every single day. So there is never an odor. I also use Arm & Hammer litter. It's very good.
