What is the best cat litter? Also, what can I do to have my cat go into his litter instead of the carpet?

I rescued a cat recently, in the beginning he was going to his litter, however, I changed the cat litter into "Feline Pine" he started going off and on, more to the carpets. Any advise would be appreciated. Also, any cat litter that is good.

1. is he peeing or pooping outside the litter box? when my girl cat was young she pooped outside the litter box and when we saw her we just placed her in her litter box and kind of rub her paws around in it. She just jumped out..but everytime she looked like she wanted to poo we just did this..it worked. shes 1 1/2 year now and no accidents. my boy cat has been peeing outside his litter box since he was a kitten. we tried EVERYTHING to get him to stop peeing our futon mainly >:-( We tried sprays, orange peels, bleach, vinegar, "natures miracle" everything you can think of! Until we found a tip on the internet to use FOIL. We put foil on the futon and neither of our cats would jump up there. We left it up for a couple of weeks. after that NO MORE PEEING.. it was a miracle so find wherever he is pooping/peeing, and cover that area with foil good luck!
2. Unlike what you see on television, the best cat litter is not the most expensive, nor is it the one that has the most "perfume". I get the cheapest cat litter our store carries. It is clay. It doesn't matter how much perfume a cat litter has, it is still going to smell if it is dirty - so keep the cat litter box clean. Try rubbing his front paws around in the cat litter - gently. That might give him the idea.
