- I use Arm & Hammer Essentials.... it's made from corn husks and is a renewable resource that works really well. However, if it's a really young kitten (8 weeks minimum, please don't remove a kitten from it's mother any sooner than that) I would go with World's Best for the first few months.... also corn based, but without the scent. A lot of people swear by yesterday's news, but I personally found it to be lousy at odor control. When your cat is fully grown you could consider toilet training them... I've done that and it works wonderfully... and no litter needed.... then I adopted to ferals and had to go back to litter boxes... at least for now.... hoping to eventually toilet train the lot of them.
- I have tried several kinds I like. There is a brand called Feline Pine, which comes in two forms. One is small compressed pellets made from sawdust. As the litter gets used, the pellets slowly break down into loose sawdust. The other is a loose semi-clumping form, again made from pine sawdust. Both are biodegradable and good at controlling litter box smell. I have tried both. Someone once told me that the pellet form of Feline Pine is exactly the same as the pellets used for pellet stoves, which is cheaper than Feline Pine. I dont know personally if that's true or if it works. I used Feline Pine for 3 years and liked it alot Now I use Arm & Hammer Essentials. It is also biodegradable, made from corn fibers. It clumps well and has a pleasant scent to it, and is excellent at controlling litter box smell. I switched to it because once I desperately needed cat litter and couldn't find anyone open nearby that had Feline Pine. I found Arm & Hammer Essentials at the grocery store, and I liked it so much I switched to it. Arm & Hammer also makes a powder for litter box smell, which comes in a little box. Everything I've ever bought made by that company is excellent quality. The only thing I have heard you shouldn't use with kittens is the clumping clay litter. The reason for this is if the kittens get litter on their feet and lick it off when grooming, they can ingest some of the litter, and it can swell up inside them and make them very sick or even kill them. I don't know if the same is true for biodegradable/natural types of clumping litter, but I'd play it on the safe side just in case. Good luck, I hope this is helpful =^.^=
