  1. Go to www.petfinder.com, and put in your zip code. It will not only give you pets for adoption in your area, but it will also list the shelters closest to you. Good luck and thank you for adopting!!
  2. Look up your local ASPCA. Saving a pet is the only logical option for a pet owner. Whatever you do, don't buy one at the pet store. The "mills" they come from are outrageous. Why would you even consider a pet shop as an option when you could save an animal's life instead?
  3. Check www.petfinder.com
  4. http//:www.gumtree.com/ is a very good website. There are loads of people on there willing to sell or put kittens up for adoption, as well as many other animals. Just beware of scammers. You'll easily recognise and pick out the faulty scammers trying to sell you something that they don't even have.
  5. Go to google and put in re-homing and your area and you should come up with a list of centres who re-home. If you are going to be re-homing a kitten go and see them (the shelter) and talk to them and they will try and match you with the cat/kitten, you may need to fill in a form asking you about your life style, they just want to make sure there getting it right. failing that you could look at the notice board at pets at home as people often post there. (that's where I found my cat)
  6. Assuming you are in Birmingham UK: http://www.catchat.org/adoption/mids.html This website has owners rehoming too. Beware of Gumtree. Many of the people selling kittens on there are irresponsible at best, and may well be basically mills. Look at how many of them charge different prices for different colours... looking for profit or welfare of the kittens? You decide... I'm not saying you wouldn't find a kitten on Gumtree or similar, but be wary and do your sums. A kitten from a shelter might cost a bit more (but not always!), but will have been with mum long enough, has probably had at least it's first vacinations and may well come with all jabs, microchipping, several weeks health insurance and neutering vouchers. A kitten sold on Gumtree for profit may not have any of that, and by making the owner some money you may encourage them to let their cat get pregnant time and time again until she too sick and weak to look after kittens. The kittens may also be too young and ill. If you buy from an advert always see mum with kittens, don't buy if they are unhealthy, know what you are paying for (some folks charge to put off bad homes... but it's better if they charge to cover real health costs, including vacinations), and expect to be asked lots of questions. If you see bad conditions don't 'rescue' the kitten yourself: you'll be paying for mum, dad and more kittens to be kept in those conditions. Walk away and report to the RSPCA. Good luck! Sorry for the rant: even if it doesn't apply to you, it might to someone else reading these answers.
