Cat Information

What is the healthiest wet cat food on the market these days?

Hello, I am going to be switching my cat from dry cat food to wet. My vet says a wet diet is richer in proteins and that is healthier for my indoor baby. I have never fed wet food before and I am wondreing which brands are among the top ten regarding quality and protein content. Any thoughts and suggestons would be great! Thank You!

  2. We use Wellness products - both wet and dry. You can't buy them at the market. They are sold at "gourmet" pet stores [addition - and some health food markets] only. They use "human grade" products and never have had any items recalled. I suggest you continue to provide some dry food, as your cat needs some hard crunchy stuff to keep his teeth clean. If not, you can brush his teeth (ha ha just try it!) or give him a special chew you can order from some vets called "Virbac Oral Hygiene Chews for Cats" by C.E.T. Home Dental Care.
  3. Merrick is great, has human grade ingredients, no grains. You might have to try a few brands/flavors to see what your cat likes best. My cat doesn't like canned much, but I feed it to her daily anyway. Merrick is the only kind my cat will eat. Make sure you gradually switch her food over the course of a week or two to prevent stomach upset. Feed 1/2 old food, half new food, gradually reducing the old food and increasing the new food portions daily. What to look for: No by-products, a named meat like chicken in the first ingredient, high protein, low grains. Other great brands are: Merrick, Natura Innova EVO, Wellness, Felidae, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Holistic Blend, Orijen, Petcurean Go! Natural, Petcurean Foundations, Petcurean Summit, Natura California Natural, Natura Innova, by Nature, Nutram, Nature’s Variety.
  4. This is so cool! First, please pat your vet on the back for me. I've been learning that it's rare for vets to know what they're talking about when it comes to cat food (some, not all!) And good for you too! So anyway, IMHO, the best canned foods can be found in the What to feed link, or two others I will recommend. What I like about this list is that it's been researched by someone else so I don't have to try to figure things out. There are lots of good foods out there, but unless you do the math (figuring out carbs, calories, etc.) you won't know how much of those things your cat is taking in. There are tons of other good foods out there, but you can't necessarily take their word on the calories, and they never list the carb content. So that's why I like this. The two I will personally recommend are Nature's Variety Instincts (not Prairie) or By Nature Organics. I do not (yet) feed either of these, but they are the two I've decided to switch to. I've done a little research of my own, and both brands seem to be quite good, very very low in carbs, grain-free, etc. I'm dealing with a little porker which is why I'm so concerned about carbs and calories.
  5. whiskas or friskies ........they are the best quality
