How do I transition into using new cat litter without my cat peeing outside the box?

I just rescued a cat and he came with a TON of unused litter. Unfortunately, it smells awful, and I found some new stuff that doesn't smell like litter at all and I want to use it. I put a new litter box with the new stuff in his room with the old box. He isn't using the new box, which isn't a surprise to me because he's used to it. If I take away the old one, will that cause him to pee on my carpet instead?

  1. Yes cats are picky....try mixin the old litter with the new.
  2. It could. Cats do not like change. He is also probably still traumatized from moving to a new environment. I would suggest slowly mixing the new litter in with the old. Gradually increase the new litter and decrease the old. You may even have to do it a handful at a time until he is ok with the new stuff.
  3. i think your carpets might get pee'd on!! cats get used to one tyoe of litter and if you change it, they get confused. My advise is to maybe use the new litter but cover it with a layer of the stuff he's used to, then gradually use less and less of the old stuff and he'll be pee'ing in the non-smelly litter and think nothing of it!!!
  4. Since it is a male cat they will be very picky. Try mixing the two and gradually go to the new one. If it does not work then put baking soda in with the kind he likes. Also, male cats when they are moved to new homes tend to get kidney stones, so you might want to take him to the vet if he does keep using the floor as the liter box.
  5. some litters have directions on how to switch litters. they say how much of the new litter you should put in. i never use thos directions and my cats dont even notice. we use to do tidy cats regular. then we switched completly to tidy cats crystals. cats didn't pee ouytside of the litterbox. we just recently switched to arm and hammer cause the crystals stuff isnt at walmart anywhere.♥ our cats dont notice a thing when we switch new litters.
  6. start out by use ing the old litter and 1/4 of it teh new and in a week or so make it half new half old and in another week or so make it 1/4 new and 3/4 old and in another week or so completely switch over to the new. This is hte same techneque you use for switching food my mother has switched food and liter so many times ant she has always used this method and we have never had a problem with our animals not eating or not using the box.
  7. Yes it might. Cats can be very picky about their litter, or he might not even recognise the new litter as such. The best way to go is to slowly mix in the new litter with the old, at first having the old litter on top. Take a week or two to complete the transition. He should soon get the picture this way. Good luck!!!
  8. You should get the bad smelling litter and put some good smelling stuff like Charmin Ultra for cats.
  9. u keep putting him into the litter box then he'll kno wat it is for trust me i hhad the same problem
