Cat Information

My mother is allergic to all cats except Abyssinians and Bengals - what others may she not be allergic to?

We were looking at a Burmese for sale cheap, because she has a deviated septum. We're not looking for a show cat, just one that doesn't cause allergies. What is it about Abyssinians and Bengals that doesn't trigger her allergies? A different kind of dander? Do Burmese, Chausie, or Somalis share this trait?

  1. It all has to do with their saliva. Some cats have more "detergent" in their saliva than others and it depends on the individual. The saliva dries on their fur then becomes airborne, causing allergies. I'm not sure that it is limited to breeds as to which are less allergy prone.
  2. i have an abyssinian bengal named sasha and she is 2 and i think the reason why those breeds don't cause allergies is because they have really short fur that isn't prickly which sounds kind of odd but i'm telling the truth. plus she barely sheds. they are great cats. i think you should just look for short haired cats and your mother will be allergy free!
